This project is based on the DS1050 chip, a 5-bit pulse-width modulator (PWM) controlled via a 2-wire (I²C) interface. The 2-wire bus allows a single master device to control up to eight slave devices (DS1050 or other compatible 2-wire peripherals). The project consists of a DS1050 I²C PWM generator combined with a MOSFET stage capable of driving high-current loads. It is primarily designed for driving LEDs and resistive loads, but it can also be used with inductive loads when an external flyback diode is added to protect against back-EMF.

This power driver shield is designed to drive solenoids or brushed DC motors using the OLEDUINO-V2 platform. The driver can handle peak currents of up to 3.7A and supports a DC supply voltage of up to 24Vdc.

The PWM interface can be used to drive single-coil relays, Dual coil relay, solenoids and DC brushed motor. To actuate a load the driver must supply current in either the forward or reverse state as defined in the PWM control table.

After actuation, the outputs can be disabled (IN1 = IN2 = 0) to place the driver in sleep mode and reduce power consumption. Alternatively, the outputs can be briefly set to brake mode after actuation to suppress back-EMF effects from the relay and prevent current from flowing back into the VM supply node.

When using the DRV8231 device, an external current-sense resistor is required; a 0.22 Ω, 2 W, 1% SMD 2512 resistor is recommended.

Intelligent Power Module (IPM) board has been designed using FSBS5CH60 IC from Fairchild, which provides a fully-featured, high-performance inverter output stage for AC Induction, BLDC, and PMSM motors. These modules integrate optimized gate drive of the built-in IGBTs to minimize EMI and losses, while also providing multiple on-module protection features including under-voltage lockouts, over-current shutdown, and fault reporting. The built-in, high-speed HVIC requires only a single supply voltage and translates the incoming logic-level gate inputs to the high-voltage, high-current drive signals required to properly drive the module’s internal IGBTs. Separate negative IGBT terminals are connected to the shunt resistor to provide the current feedback to the micro-controller. This IPM module helps to develop lots of power applications and also can be used as H-Bridge for brushed DC motor. The module mainly helps to drive Hall sensor-based or encoder-based motors, it doesn’t support the FOC algorithm, FOC-based IPM board is under development and will be published soon.

The project presented here is a 3-phase Brushless motor driver. The project consists of an L6235 device which is DMOS fully integrated 3-phase motor driver with overcurrent protection. Manufactured in BCD technology, the device combines isolated DMOS power transistors with CMOS and bipolar circuits on the same chip. The device includes all the circuitry needed to drive a 3-phase BLDC motor including a 3-phase DMOS bridge, a constant off-time PWM current controller, and the decoding logic for single-ended hall sensors that generates the required sequence for the power stage. Running the project in stand-alone mode, instead, three control pins enable the device, setting the direction of the rotation, breaking the motor, and the jumper chooses to run in torque or speed mode. The board is suitable for small motors used in many home appliances and can handle torque and speed control with a high efficiency of up to 95%.

This high current forward-reverse DC motor driver is built using STK681-332 IC from ON Semiconductor. The circuit can drive brushed DC Motor with up to 12 A peak current. The circuit requires 3 input signals: Enable for PWM input for speed control, IN1 and IN2 to change the motor direction and to apply the brake while the motor is in running condition. Monitor (Fault) pin is used when either of the outputs short-circuits detector, overcurrent detector, or overheat detector is activated. When the detector is activated, this pin is set low and all outputs are latched off. If the output pin is short-circuited directly to VCC or connected directly to GND, an output short circuit condition is detected and the output is latched in the off state. To restart the operation, turn on 5V supply again. The maximum input frequency is 50 kHz. Both ICs required a large size heat sink to dissipate heat.
